July 23rd 2021 marks the opening of the summer Olympics hosted by Japan. A year later than expected, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the event is anticipated to be one of the best. Country's from all over the world will showcase their best athletes and compete for as many gold medals as they can possibly obtain. From swimming to cycling, gymnastics to athletics, athletes at the top of their game will compete. Also this year we see new events being added, skateboarding, karate, sport climbing, baseball/softball and surfing which in turn will give our younger generations something to enjoy.
This year Team GB has the second largest ever delegation for an Olympics with 376 athletes competing in total and these athletes have already made history before the games have even begun, this is due in part to the fact that this years team is represented by more women than men. In fact of the 376 athletes taking part 201 of them are women (53.5%) and 175 are male (46.5%). Of the 376 athletes 122 are returning Olympians and 51 of those already hold Olympic medals.
